Even then, food historians are not sure about the cake’s origin or how the dessert acquired its name. Interestingly, there is no record to signify whether this cake is native to the state of Texas or not.

Recipe for the Texas Sheet Cake started appearing in the early 1960s. By the 1970s, the cake had caught the fancy of the people and it started ranking high on the popularity parameter. During this period, people started experimenting with alternative ingredients to give the cake their own twist. As a result, many variations of the cake’s recipe came into existence.    

Traditionally, the cake is baked in a large and flat pan of rectangular shape. Texas Sheet Cake still remains a real crowd pleaser.

It is a delight to bake this wonderful cake as the recipe is so easy and the taste turns out to be so good. Here comes a quick and simple recipe for Texas Sheet Cake:

Yield: 15 servings

Ingredients

  • Butter: 1 cup (cubed)
  • Sugar: 2 cups
  • All-purpose flour: 2 cups
  • Baking cocoa: 1/4 cup
  • Baking soda: 1 teaspoon
  • Water: 1 cup
  • Sour cream: 1/2 cup 
  • Salt: 1/2 teaspoon 

For Icing:

  • Butter: 1/2 cup (cubed)
  • Confectioners’ sugar: 3-3/4 cups 
  • Milk: 1/4 cup and 2 tablespoons 
  • Vanilla extract: 1 teaspoon 
  • Baking cocoa: 3 tablespoons 

Directions

  • Select a large baking pan of about 10-inch by 15-inch size with a depth of around 1-inch. Grease the pan and keep it aside.
  • In a large saucepan, take butter, cocoa, and water.
  • Put the saucepan on the heat and allow the ingredients to boil. Remove from the heat.
  • Add flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar to the cocoa mixture and mix well.
  • Gently stir in the sour cream into this mixture and blend until smooth.
  • Pour the mixture into the greased pan.
  • Bake at 350° for 20-24 minutes. Insert a toothpick near the center. If it comes out clean, know that baking is complete.   
  • Take out the cake from the oven. 
  • For icing: In a small pan take milk, cocoa, and butter and bring the mixture to a boil. Remove from heat. Add the vanilla extract and whisk in the confectioners’ sugar to make a smooth mix. Pour it over the warm cake. Allow to cool before serving.
