History: A heavenly indulgence

The history of paratha can be traced back to the ancient Vedic times. Over the ages, the paratha retained its popularity among the people. With changing food habits and tastes of people, this simple food item also evolved. Recipes of various stuffed parathas are described in Manasollasa, a Sanskrit encyclopedia that was composed in the 12th century. 

One thing to note is that Manasollasa does not include items made with eggs. As such, the recipe for egg paratha is not mentioned in this ancient text. It is not known when or who first made the egg paratha. But it is clear that this stuffed fare is enjoyed by people even today.

Egg paratha is a healthy breakfast item made from eggs and wheat flour. Some of the health benefits of egg parathas are:

Ingredients and Preparation: A delicious recipe

Egg parathas can be prepared in a variety of ways. Here we bring to you a traditional recipe that does not require much effort to cook and tastes yummy. 

Preparation Time: 35 min

Cooking Time: 5 min

Serves: 4 persons

Ingredients

  • Whole grain wheat flour: 2 cups
  • Eggs: 4 
  • Onion: 1 cup (chopped)
  • Cheddar cheese: 1/4 cup (shredded)
  • Green chilies: 2 (chopped)
  • Oil: 4 tablespoon
  • Black pepper: 1/4 teaspoon
  • Salt: 1 teaspoon

Directions

  • Take a bowl and mix wheat flour with 1/4 teaspoon salt.
  • Add sufficient water to this mixture to make a firm dough and knead it for 5 minutes.
  • Cover the bowl with a lid and keep it aside for 20 minutes
  • Put a pan on fire and add oil to it.
  • As the oil gets heated, add onion and green chilies to it.
  • Fry until the onion changes color and becomes soft.
  • Add eggs, remaining salt, and pepper and continue to fry till the eggs are fully cooked.
  • Bring down the pan from the fire and set aside to cool.
  • Divide the dough into small balls and flatten each ball.
  • Dust a flattened ball with wheat flour and roll it into a small thick circle.
  • Place 2 tablespoon of scrambled eggs and shredded cheese in the center of this circle and carefully seal the edges.
  • Gently roll out the stuffed ball into a thin paratha. (Take care not to make the circle very thin as the dough may crack)
  • Place a skillet on fire and when it becomes hot, put the stuffed paratha on it.
  • Cook on a medium flame till brown spots appear on the paratha.
  • Flip and cook the other side for the same effect.
  • Take the paratha off the skillet.
  • Repeat the process with the remaining dough balls.
