BACK PAIN DURING PREGNANCY: HOW TO GET RELIEF

Many women experience back pain during their pregnancy. Research indicates that up to ninety percent of women experience some type of back pain during their pregnancy. Back pain can range from mild to severe, and it can be chronic or severe. Lower back pain usually begins in the second half of pregnancy.

But what causes back pain during pregnancy? There are a number of causes. One of the most common is pre-existing back problems. Women with a history of back problems have a higher risk of experiencing back pain during pregnancy.  Increased hormones can allow cause the ligaments in the pelvis to soften. The joints become looser to prepare for the birth. These factors may decrease support in the back, causing pain.

Apply Heat or Ice  

Applying heat or ice to your back may help relieve pain. If your health care provider approves, use ice on the area that is painful for up to 20 minutes twice a day. After several days, apply heat using a hot water bottle or a heating pad on the area. You should avoid applying heat to your abdomen.

 

Stay Active

You may be tempted to stop working out when experiencing pain, but that can only make things worse. Regular exercise increases flexibility and strengthens muscles. Increased flexibility and strength can reduce the pressure on your spine. Ask your physician to recommend exercises that are safe during pregnancy.

 

Work on Your Posture

Poor posture can be a major contributor to back pain. If your physician agrees that it is appropriate for you during your pregnancy, yoga can greatly help improve posture, as well as strengthen the lower back. If you work at a desk all day, make sure that you have the proper support. An ergonomic chair with lumbar support can help provide support to the lumbar curve in your lower back.
