It’s time for coffee and Armenian dessert. Dessert is the favorite of many people. An Armenian cuisine diverse but it is not full of desserts despite the fact that Armenians love desserts and they are sweet eaters. However they do have some really good sweet dishes, among them is the Armenian gata. Gata is a very classy dessert, simple and classy but still tasty. It can remind a little bit of sweet bread and can seem to be exotic for some people. As a dessert Gata can perfectly introduce the Armenian culture. Gata is one of those dishes that have different ways of cooking. There are many different recipes how to make and how to bake Gatas.
To make Gata you will need to have the following ingredients and food items in your kitchen
For the dough
- A cup of milk
- 1/2 cup heavy
- 2 large eggs, separated (1 full egg and an egg white)
- 3 teaspoon honey ( or sugar, preferable honey)
- 4 teaspoon of melted butter
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1 1/2 teaspoon instant dry yeast
- 4 cups of flour, avoid adding too much flour!
For the filling
- 1/3 cups of sugar
- 1/3 cups of flour
- 2 teaspoon of clarified butter of middle temperature.
You may also need a vanilla extract, which is not a must, but is preferable.
For making take all the ingredients you need for dough, then mix them and roll it so as the dough will become quite thin. Place it into greasy bowl and keep it there approximately 1-2 hours.
It is really easy to make the filling just like the dough. You just mix above mentioned ingredients together and make it as one. Check the consistency; make sure that it sticks together.
Divide the dough into 3 balls, tap each ball with 6 holes and then fill them with the stuffing. Gather all the sides together and make it one. Use fork for making stripes on it and put it into oven, bake it 30-35 minutes. The color must be golden yellow. The temperature of oven must be 180 degrees. After that it is ready to serve.
Note one thing about this sweet dish. This sweet bread can be kept for weeks without getting spoiled in the fridge and it is tastier in cold way then in hot.
Gata at first may seem too simple for sweet appetizer, but once you have you will really love it. There are several types of making of Gata, but the one we have introduced is the simplest one to make and is delicious. It is also less oily.
The nutrition level is not high, it almost does not contain good qualities, and it is rich in calories and is not advisable to eat every day.
The timing is of making Gata is pretty long. It will take you something like 1:30 or 2 hours and you can guess that the making is really hard though it is worth the result.
